Coastal and Seaside Landscaping Decor Ideas

Consider incorporating some of the following decorations into your coastal or oceanfront landscape design.  Wood pilings with nautical rope make excellent barriers along a pathway or patio, driftwood can make for an excellent garden feature and a teak deck will last for many years in the sometimes unforgiving wet and windy seaside weather.

Coastal Landscaping Material Choices

Coastal or waterfront inspired landscapes should take advantage of the same material that surrounds their home.  For a waterfront home in the Greater Victoria area this usually consists of some native plants, driftwood, river rock, sea shells and nautical artifacts.

Coastal Landscaping Outdoor Fabric Choices

These outdoor fabric choices have been chosen directly from the Sunbrella website.  Sunbrella is one of the worlds leading manufacturers of outdoor fabrics.

If you're looking at incorporating an awning, a custom umbrella, or outdoor upholstery into your seaside inspired landscape design then these choices would work well.

Coastal or Seaside Landscaping Plant Palette

For landscaping a property close to the ocean you're going to need a selection of good, hardy plants that flourish in the harsh growing conditions that exist along the seaside.  This usually involves utilizing native plants, that grow there naturally. Very little shade means they must withstand intense summer sun and they get very little shelter which means they must withstand the wind and salty spray that will come along with it.

The salty spray creates poor quality soil and if plants aren't hardy enough it can actually burn them, or cause them to die.  The following plant species are mostly native to the Island and make great choices for any seaside landscape.
